Phoenix Futures and the Tectona Trust are working with the Blue Gym team and Professor Charles Abraham both of University of Exeter Medical School, to evaluate the potential benefits of a week’s sail training for people undertaking drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Nicknamed the Voyage of Recovery, the aim is to sail Tectona, a beautiful wooden hulled 74 tonne Sail Training ship originally built in 1929 and run by the Island Trust, around the entire coast of the UK in twelve one week legs.

Each leg will be crewed by Tectona's experienced staff and a different group of volunteers undergoing rehabilitation with Phoenix Futures. The experiences of those on board will be recorded and compared to those undertaking other rehabilitation activities on land and their well-being and rehabilitation progress will be followed up to investigate whether there are lasting positive effects. The voyage is now three weeks underway, with another nine to go, and reports back so far have been highly positive.
