I think this is a great paper regarding the positive impact of wildlife in the blue gym on cognitive functioning. It’s only the abstract but didn’t know if anyone might be interested http://www.ingentaconnect.com/content/berg/anthroz/1993/00000006/0

I’ve been lucky enough to be involved in the Blue Gym for most of my life. Grew up on Dartmoor and then moved ot Cornwall to work on a surfing magazine. I later was one of the founders of Surfers Against Sewage which I was then lucky enough to run for 10 years. Five and a half years as Sustainability Director at the Eden Project and now Project Manager on Blue Gym…Tough job!!!

Being Happy reduces heart attack risk

Report on and in the news today – link to Guardian:

Makes sense, so out into the Blue Gym, eat well and laugh. Think all 3 are complimentary, the more you exercise, the more you are likely to laugh and the more you need to eat and maybe more positive so more likely to eat well.

North Devon Surf Bus

NORTH DEVON – WORLD TREND SETTERS IN SURFING INNOVATION

North Devon is renowned for its endless stretches of sandy beaches, rugged shores and stunning coastlines, making it a perfect “playground” for a host of water sports. The “playground” however is not accessible to everyone according to Isabelle Bromham, North Devon’s Coastal Watersports Officer. Isabelle, who works for North Devon +, is championing a new initiative to create a “surf bus” that would allow locals and tourists with watersport… Continue

Dogs on Beaches

Today being the 1st of October means that the summer dog ban that is in place on many beaches has now been lifted for the winter. Great to see a wide range of hounds and owners hitting the Blue Gym armed with dog poop bags. I know from my family that the summer dog ban is fairly restrictive but unfortunately its the minority of dog owners who don’t scoop the poop who spoil it for all. Councils please note and make sure the poop bins are emptied at beaches as they tend to fill up more in the wint… Continue

Hurricane season!

Now is it just me or is summer coming earlier every year and then fading out into Autumn when we should still be baking? With the first of this years second hand hurricane seas and weather systems about to hit the UK, the air seems to have a definite Autumnal feel. Maybe its just me but I think I even felt the water drop in temperature last weekend. Check out the swell this weekend and remember be safe!

Hey Chris-

this looks very cool and has loads of contact info. excellent.

while not as water-based as many or as i’d like to be, did spend new year’s day on the pebbles of penzance. seems to me, no matter what your mood, time on or near the water, any moving water especially, helps. is good for you. ahhhh…

thanks for the heads up and i can think of a few who need to know.

Feel free to put the pic on the photos page – plenty more where that came from. Can you post it from my profile or do I need to up load a full sized image? It’s my hydrofoiling International Moth ‘Carbon Footprint’ (so called ‘cos I made her out of an old carbon boat and some assorted broken spares), just incase you were wondering.
Cheers,
Katherine
